A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative set to music. Ballads derive from the medieval French chanson balladée or ballade, which were originally "dance songs".Ballads were particularly characteristic of the popular poetry and song of Britain and Ireland from the later medieval period until the 19th century.

They were widely used across Europe, and later in Australia, North Africa.By contrast, some thirty books were printed in Welsh during the sixteenth century, and rather more than in the seventeenth.

This may appear to be a quite respectable total, but of course compared with the output of any of the major printing countries it is very small indeed, for reasons which Professor Glanmor Williams has recently most.Welsh-language literature (llenyddiaeth Gymraeg) has been produced continuously since the emergence of Welsh from Brythonic as a distinct language in around the 5th century earliest Welsh literature was poetry, which was extremely intricate in form from its earliest known examples, a tradition sustained was followed by the first British prose literature in the 11th century.
